The Art of Pearl Jewellery

Apart from their obvious beauty, pearls can be used ‘as found’.

They require no cutting and little or no polishing because of their natural lustre. After skillful piercing by a fine drill, pearls may be strung on silk or, more recently, nylon. The thread may be knotted between each pearl to prevent rubbing at the points of contact.

Part of the jeweller’s skill is selecting the right pearl for the setting - colour and size being particularly important.
