Defining the perfect pearl

A pearl’s perfection is determined by its shape, the strength of its lustre, surface condition and colour.

Lustre depends on the fineness and evenness of the layers of nacre that distort and refract light.

The sharper the glow of reflection, the more perfect the shape and surface and the more valuable the pearl.

A pink tint or silvery white may be the preferred colour, though a golden glow is highly valued.
